Abstract
As someone who works with people and technology in a public library setting, I am mindful of safety issues. Sometimes, this is straightforward, such as watching out for phishing scams and telling people not to call phone numbers that pop up on their screens. But sometimes, it's more subtle, such as knowing how much emphasis to place on various concerns and also how to evaluate emerging technologies when public information is full of hype, but also fear-mongering. Library workers hold positions of trust. For our patrons who may not be very tech-savvy, what we say and do may have outsized impacts.
