Abstract
The article is an attempt to highlight impact of online social networking sites on the users of these platforms who share their sentiments and emotions through text online. The study is entirely based on the examination and evaluation of the articles published mainly in Scopus-indexed journals, exhibiting various dimensions of information that can be extracted and analysed from these sites. The study explains in detail the phenomenon of social networking and the advantages that can be garnered from the datasets that these provide. The study also touches some aspects of the influence of some well-known persons affecting the public at large through these platforms. Moreover, the study tries to present a detailed overview of misinformation disseminated through these social networking sites which is one aspect that needs thorough research in future. The study explores the possibilities where the role of librarians becomes important in arresting fake news, rumours and other types of misinformation. The future of online social networking sites (OSNS) seems to be bright, and they are certainly here to stay.
